Q |
Do I need to do anything special before I shut off my machine? |
A |
Yes. When you are ready to shut off your machine, you should first
close all of your applications. Next, begin the shut down process by clicking
on the Start button, click on Shut Down, answer the "Shut Down Windows"
dialog box question of "Are you sure you want to:" by clicking on the "Shut
down the computer?" choice and finally click on "Yes". Windows will begin
the process of shutting itself down. On the IBM Aptiva, Windows will also
power your computer off. On other machines, Windows will display a screen
that says "It’s now safe to turn off your computer". |

Q |
The Aptiva Guide starts everytime I turn my computer on. How do
I get it to stop? |
A |
While in Aptiva Guide, go to the Main Menu and click on Exit icon (the
blue door). The next screen should ask you "Do you want to exit this Aptiva
Guide?" Before you click on the Exit icon (the check mark), find the question
"Always start Aptiva Guide after rebooting" at the lower left of the yellow
box and uncheck it. (You can recheck it in the future should you wish by
following the same process and checking the question.) Finish by clicking
on the Exit check mark. Now the next time you boot, the Aptiva Guide will
not automatically start. To run the Aptiva Guide, see the next question. |

Q |
I turned off the Aptiva Guide from starting up everytime I turned
the computer on. Now I want to go back and read some information, but I
can't find it. Where is the Aptiva Guide and how do I start it? |
A |
As with most tasks under Windows 95, there are several ways to start
the Aptiva Guide:
-
If you haven't changed the default icons on the desktop, find the AptivaWare
icon and double-click it. Next double click on the Aptiva Guide icon in
the AptivaWare folder.
-
Alternatively, you can click Start, click Programs, find and then click
on AptivaWare, and then click on Aptiva Guide.
In both cases the Aptiva Guide will start and you can proceed as you desire. |

and uncheck the box labeled "Show this Windows Screen next time you start
Windows" in the lower left of the welcome screen. |

Q |
How do I install some of the extra software bundled with the IBM
Aptiva? |
A |
There are several methods available to install new software. Some Aptivas
come with an "Aptiva Installer" which you may use, or you can use one of
two other methods. Many software packages print install instructions on
the disk.
The first method uses the Control Panel’s Add/Remove Program capability.
First, if this is a floppy disk based software package, place Disk 1 into
Drive A. If this is a CD based software package, place the CD in the Aptiva’s
CD-ROM drive. Now, click on Start, click on Settings, click on Control
Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Next, click on the Install
button of the "Add/Remove Program Properties" dialog box. Now click the
Next button on the "Install Program From Floppy Disk or CD-ROM" dialog
box. Control Panel will search the floppy drives and then the CD-ROM drive
for a disk with a setup program on it. Once Setup (or sometimes, Install)
is found, click on the Finish button. Now the program will load and guide
you through the software installation.
The other method uses the Run Program option from the Start button.
As in the above method, first place the diskette or CD-ROM in the appropriate
drive. Next, click on Start, then click on Run. A "Run" dialog box will
ask "Type the name of a program, folder, or document, and Windows will
open for you." You can either type the program name (preceded by a drive
designation) or you can use the Browse button to find the appropriate setup/install
program and highlight it. You can then click on the OK button and the program
will load and guide you through the software installation. |

Q |
I’d like to modify my screen resolution or the number of colors
that can be displayed. How do I make these changes? |
A |
Under Windows 95, begin by right clicking on the Desktop. Next, click
on Properties. The Display Properties dialog box will appear. Click on
the Settings tab, and make your changes by selecting "Color palette" or
"Desktop area" and making the desired changes. Press OK to save your changes
or Cancel to exit the dialog without your changes being saved. |

Q |
The output from my new ink jet printer has bands of lighter or darker
printing. Or, the color output of my ink jet printer looks muddy. Is something
wrong with my printer? |
A |
No. Each time you install a new ink cartridge in your ink jet printer,
you should print an "alignment" page and a "test" page. The alignment procedure
will insure that the ink from the ink cartridges line up correctly. The
test page, besides giving you an opportunity to check the output, will
use each ink color and prime each ink nozzle with ink. |
