Some Basics:
Q. Hardware & Software - What do I need to operate my system and do letters? A. A computer needs both. Let's talk hardware first: You can choose between two types: IBM-compatibles sold under names like IBM, Compac, Packard Bell, etc.. or the Apple Macintosh. Ask questions at work, at school, and check with friends to see what they prefer. You may want to try both kinds. The software will depend on what you expect to use your computer for most.... Writing? Personal finance? Graphics and design? Q. What should I look for? A. Three things to look for:
2. Storage: That's what the hard
drive is for... to store information on your computer (like closets in
your home). Storage space is measured in megabytes and gigabytes
and generally ranges from 540 megabytes to 14.4 gigabytes.
3. Efficiency: This is where RAM or Random Access Memory comes in. RAM is like a temporary storage area for certain pieces of information required by the computer at a given moment. The more RAM, the faster and easier your computer will work. Q. Do I really need a CD-ROM? A. Strongly consider a CD-ROM drive, as most software is coming out using this media vice the diskettes. Q. What kind of printer should I get? A. If your not planning to write a book or movie script, then get a small Deskjet or a Dot Matrix. Q. Do I really need a modem and what kind should I get if I do? A. If you expect to send and receive faxes and would like to surf the Internet, then you should get one (most systems come with one anyway). Speed of your modem is important, as now the modems are at 56kps and takes very little time to send, receive, and surf, but if you have a 1200kps or 14400kps it would take quite awhile to do anything as the receiver at the other end would have to slow down to receive your work. Q. What Software should I get? A. The choices of software are mindboggling. The number of programs has tripled in the past two years. Some stores will let you try out their software. Also ask friends, family, and coworkers if you can try their software. Q. COST? A. The average basic home personal computer last year cost $ 1400.00. A good computer with all the components mentioned above would cost between $ 1800.00 and $ 3000.00 depending on the systems configuration. Q. Warranty's? A. Most name brands offer a three-year warranty. Make sure the warranty offers on-site service for at least within the first year. ![]() |
